Food naming

In accordance with Resolution No. 301 of the Georgian Government on the Provision of Food Information to Consumers, food can be sold to the final consumer using the following designations:

  • Official name: This refers to the name of the food as defined by Georgian legislation, under which it is delivered to the final consumer or a public catering facility. Examples of official names include Kvevri wine, fortified wine, etc.
  • Common name: This refers to the name of the food that the consumer perceives as a type of food and does not require additional explanation during the purchase. Examples of common names include pasta, caviar, etc.
  • Descriptive name: This refers to a food name that describes the food clearly enough for the end consumer to understand its true nature and distinguish it from other similar foods. For instance, descriptive names can include pizza with mushrooms, pizza with vegetables, etc.

It is important to note that the name of the food should not be altered by using a name protected as intellectual property, a trademark, or an imaginary name.
